Well, you guys, Disney announced that monsters at work will be getting a season two in 2023. This is an animated series we all really like. Super funny. And of course, it's a it's a not a prequel. A sequel to Monsters Monsters Inc Monsters University series. So, yeah, it's great. And then we also have Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness Tomorrow all coming out on Disney. 00;04;54;06 - 00;05;06;11 Speaker 6 Plus, we'll be reviewing that at a later date because we have a lot of upcoming releases in the next couple of weeks, but it'll be coming soon. Well, as we have, as you might have been able to tell, we are going to be doing Big Hero six this week. There is a new Baymax series that is coming out in two weeks, I believe. And so guys, I had never seen this movie and it came out right in The Gap. There were a couple of movies right in there that I missed, like Frozen. 00;05;58;21 - 00;06;22;01 Speaker 2 Oh, I know. Well, I didn't see Frozen in theaters either, thank goodness. I mean, there was I said literally there was a strike. Okay. I'd say Brother Bear, but didn't miss much. There. So but there was a stretch of it. So this was my first time seeing it. Pete, can you kind of give us a rundown for those of you who may have seen it before? 00;06;22;01 - 00;06;28;08 Speaker 2 But it's been many, many years. You can't give us a rundown on a basic set of the story. 00;06;29;05 - 00;06;54;17 Speaker 4 Yeah, it's a story of a young teenager named Hero who's, like, super genius. And he builds robots for bot fighting set in like this fictional city called San Fran Tokyo. And his brother kind of like, drags him away from that and and gets them involved with his college that he's at and his group of friends that are all science nerds. 00;06;55;10 - 00;07;19;29 Speaker 4 So he develops this micro bot that can work that like thousands of them can work together and he gets into the program. But at the same time he gets into the program. There's a big fire in the lab. His brother ends up running in to try to save the the the main professor and his brother gets killed. And so the story ends up coming out of that event. 00;07;20;14 - 00;07;43;10 Speaker 4 He finds out that he thinks his bots were all destroyed, but one of them is still left and is trying to communicate with the other ones. And he makes friends with. I guess the important thing and talk about is Baymax, which is the soft robot that his brother invented and he kind of connects to his brother through Baymax. 00;07;43;10 - 00;08;08;01 Speaker 4 And that's the main gist of the story is hero's relationship with Baymax, the other characters that he that he met from the lab also come into the story to make up a superhero team. And so he creates, you know, he makes all these costumes or whatever for them, and they end up going after the person that ended up causing the fire and leading to his brother's death. 00;08;08;01 - 00;08;16;09 Speaker 4 So I think that's probably a spoiler list version of it, even though, you know, we'll we'll probably get a little bit more talk about it. 00;08;16;09 - 00;08;17;02 Speaker 2 Yeah, yeah. 00;08;17;17 - 00;08;32;16 Speaker 4 Yeah. But so it's but it's really at its heart, it's about him and this robot, really, and how he recovers from the death of his brother sort of. And of course, he's an orphan. They're both orphans, you know, because it's a Disney movie. 00;08;32;22 - 00;08;33;22 Speaker 3 Right. So they live. 00;08;33;22 - 00;08;36;25 Speaker 6 With they live with the with the young and. Yeah, yeah. 00;08;37;07 - 00;08;39;24 Speaker 3 Yeah. So yeah. 00;08;39;24 - 00;08;42;26 Speaker 4 But I think that sums it up because anything I missed. 00;08;43;09 - 00;09;02;11 Speaker 6 That's a good summary. Part of it is figuring out who the villain is. That's part, part of the storyline involves who. Yeah. Actually the villain. And how did the villain become the villain? So his sort of origin story is part of the story as well. But I think the relationship between Hero and and Baymax is probably the most important part of the movie. 00;09;02;11 - 00;09;05;08 Speaker 6 And then the relationship with the rest of the hero team. 00;09;05;22 - 00;09;06;00 Speaker 3 Yeah. 00;09;06;18 - 00;09;25;02 Speaker 4 Yeah. And I would say maybe I'm getting ahead of myself. But to me, one of the maybe weaknesses of the movie is that the other characters besides Hero and Baymax are pretty thin. This is a marvel movie. 00;10;29;21 - 00;10;31;07 Speaker 3 Um hmm. 00;10;31;07 - 00;10;40;20 Speaker 2 And I kind of want to go through and each one, what helps set it apart from other marvels, we're going to talk whether it's really. 00;10;41;14 - 00;10;41;24 Speaker 3 These. 00;10;41;29 - 00;10;53;17 Speaker 2 Should be seen as a marvel movie or not. But let's talk a little bit to start about kind of what sets it apart. And Steve, I want to start with you. This is an animated show. 00;10;54;24 - 00;11;14;19 Speaker 5 I'd say that's the obvious choice because this came out before. What if let's when you're asking me what I thought about, it's the first Marvel animated movie, I guess. And I was surprised learning last week on the show that it was a marvel movie that sort of surprised me because I see it more as definitely a Disney movie. 00;11;15;00 - 00;11;26;06 Speaker 5 You know, we talked about the death of a loved one, the loss of the significant character, which makes me think of bang, bang, like from the inside out. All right. 00;11;27;18 - 00;11;28;04 Speaker 6 Bang, bang. 00;11;28;07 - 00;11;33;25 Speaker 5 Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang. Yes. Yeah. There's some are the following, the following. 00;11;33;25 - 00;11;55;28 Speaker 6 That's very sad. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I, I, I think you're right. I think the animated. But I also think the other part, another issue is it's not right. It's not connected to anything else. Right? So we talk about the MCU, too, so much on this show because we have all these different shows and movies that we've been talking about watching. 00;11;56;18 - 00;12;00;29 Speaker 6 Most of them are connected in. I know too much for Derek's liking. 00;12;01;09 - 00;12;02;06 Speaker 3 The most and how. 00;12;02;08 - 00;12;03;09 Speaker 2 Much marvel. 00;12;04;12 - 00;12;32;10 Speaker 6 Most of them have some connection to each other, or they're setting up a future connection, right? So Wandavision obviously was kind of the characters were connected to prior movies, but it was a news story, but now it's being connected to as I even though I haven't seen it yet, the new Doctor Strange in the multiverse of madness, but pretty much every marvel movie or show seems to be connected in some way. 00;12;32;10 - 00;13;05;22 Speaker 6 Except we don't know if Moon Night is going to be connected. Right? So this is not connected. It's not part of the MCU, even though it's Marvel, it never had any connection to the MCU. And I don't think it's going to have any connection to the MCU. Probably the primarily because it is done in an animated series and does an animated movie and now is animated series, is if that's the word, Derek, what else can you think of that sets it apart? 00;13;05;22 - 00;13;33;14 Speaker 2 Well, I would say one big thing for me is it's a young, completely mortal protagonist. He has even he's not like Peter Parker. That got bit by the radioactive spider. He's not there's nothing about him other than the fact that he is a science nerd. And so you do not see a young guy with a high school at 14, which tells me he's 15 or 16 somewhere probably in this movie. 00;13;33;14 - 00;14;22;11 Speaker 2 So to me, that's one thing that you don't see a lot of movies. You've got people except really from just about Hawkeye. Everybody else has some kind of powers for the most part. I will say, going back to your animation comment, Steve, this animation reminds me so much. The characters look like the people in Tangled in Frozen. They all of them kind of had that, but especially Tangled, the the narrower chins wasn't anything back then for some of the Disney animation all still kind of looked like Mrs. Incredible but looked a little bit like Elastigirl all have that basic same hedge ape, I think. 00;14;22;23 - 00;14;33;19 Speaker 2 And that's one thing that I was as I was watching it this afternoon that I really noticed. It looks like this could be in the same universe obviously many years later, but in the same universe as tangled. 00;14;34;29 - 00;14;40;04 Speaker 6 But in that but in that vein, it also has a little bit of animated planet, right? There's one. 00;14;41;22 - 00;14;42;14 Speaker 5 Definitely. Yeah. 00;14;42;23 - 00;14;55;25 Speaker 6 Even though I agree the head shapes are similar to Tangled, but there's much more anime and Japanese influence in the way that this is animated than other things. The only thing I wanted to add was I think of I mean we had a few Marvel properties that were pretty obscure. I'll put Moonlight in that group, but really this is like as obscure a marvel property. I mean, like, even now, eight years later or whatever it is, I still know nothing outside of the the movie and I guess the TV show about the comics on Big Hero six. 00;15;26;25 - 00;15;48;22 Speaker 4 And from what I understand, they they took the characters, but they really didn't really pay attention to the story at all. So it's very different from the comic, from what I understand, but I don't know anything about the comics. So I'd say, you know, even though some of the Marvel characters are not super, super famous, they're at least, you know, generally relatively. 00;15;48;22 - 00;16;08;06 Speaker 4 I mean, you know, even characters like, you know, The Hulk and I mean Iron Man, Captain America, people know those characters. But Big Hero six, it's like, huh? Right. So I think that made it. And as we said, you know, last week we were saying, oh, is this a marvel movie? And I kept I was typing. I remember saying, it's a marvel movie. 00;16;08;14 - 00;16;20;07 Speaker 4 And you guys were all weren't sure. It's not really obviously a marvel movie when you watch it, it doesn't doesn't feel like it because it doesn't have all those things we just talked about, you know. 00;16;21;10 - 00;16;33;09 Speaker 2 And I don't know, do they ever actually say it's a marvel movie? Is it ever. I can't remember. I do remember watching the initial titles. It was ever in. 00;16;33;09 - 00;16;35;11 Speaker 5 I think someone mentioned last week in the. 00;16;35;11 - 00;16;36;19 Speaker 2 Credits that it went. 00;16;36;19 - 00;16;39;02 Speaker 3 Yeah, I think it dropped. 00;16;39;02 - 00;16;42;06 Speaker 4 It in the credits. They do. And then there's a post-credits scene with Stan Lee. 00;16;42;06 - 00;16;46;04 Speaker 2 I don't know if it was Stan Lee. To me, that's the biggest thing. Jennifer the I wish they had gone beyond just the stereotypes of those different characters and had actually developed them just a little bit deeper. The development, only development I saw and really wasn't development as much as a moral backbone is in them to hero, to not kill the professor right. 00;17;25;27 - 00;17;44;24 Speaker 2 As I didn't quite catch this and Sam, you've many more times than I have was Baymax prevent the chip from being released or when the GAO put it back in, did she do something to keep it from being really eat? I think when he was trying to take it out, I think it was Baymax that was preventing it. 00;17;53;23 - 00;17;55;24 Speaker 6 I think so too. After, I think. 00;17;55;25 - 00;18;16;17 Speaker 4 Okay, because because Baymax because of the green chip says caused no harm. And knowing what he had done before by pulling out the green chip, I think, you know, Baymax was trying was basically stopping that from happening to prevent harm. So to speak. It's part of his mission. 00;18;19;06 - 00;18;32;16 Speaker 5 And in speaking that ship, I was reading that in Iron Man there is and maybe an Easter egg. Tony, Tony! Tony Stark picks up a chip that says Tadashi. 00;18;32;16 - 00;18;33;17 Speaker 3 How cool. 00;18;34;07 - 00;18;34;28 Speaker 6 I love that. 00;18;35;25 - 00;18;56;06 Speaker 2 Okay. Yeah. And then for also Grizz things they were trying to animate it with some anime definitely get those although okay did it look like Hero could have played Megaman in the v video games? I don't know, man. 00;18;59;17 - 00;19;00;09 Speaker 3 Yeah, yeah. 00;19;01;14 - 00;19;05;11 Speaker 2 And then I Nix's Baymax is an adorable Rubin ask Iron. 00;19;05;12 - 00;19;16;02 Speaker 6 Especially when they put his armor on him. Oh, my God. I wonder. He's in his red armor. It's like one. It's so. It's such a good. I love that. I love that visualization. 00;19;16;11 - 00;19;16;19 Speaker 3 Yeah. 00;19;16;24 - 00;19;17;15 Speaker 6 Love it, Nick. 00;19;17;28 - 00;19;30;09 Speaker 5 Yeah, yeah. I had a moment where I thought Power Rangers because all their characters have different colored suits and they are like running towards the action. Yes. Power Rangers goes. 00;19;31;06 - 00;19;32;22 Speaker 3 Yeah, yeah, yeah. 00;19;33;03 - 00;19;50;18 Speaker 4 Well, there was definitely the other thing I noticed at one point is Hiro had a Voltron shirt. He had a shirt with the the Voltron robot. So it's definitely in an in there's definitely influences there from Japanese cartoons and anime. 00;19;52;02 - 00;20;10;22 Speaker 2 And Sam, you kind of brought up this one. Speaking of posing, we saw several instances of the Marvel pose in this. But Pete, I'm going to start with you on this one. Do you consider this truly a marvel movie? 00;20;10;22 - 00;20;37;08 Speaker 4 I think it I think it has a lot of the hallmarks of a marvel movie, though, as well, because it has the creation of a superhero team. You know, it has a somewhat mentioned Iron Man. Nick mentioned Iron Man for Baymax. It kind of reminds me of like Team Iron Man or something like that, because Stark was also a, you know, a super genius that invented things just like this kid. 00;20;37;22 - 00;20;58;24 Speaker 4 And, you know, he puts he basically puts the team together. He somehow this is this is one thing I don't completely get is like, you know, even before they find out, Fred is, as you know, rich in everything, he's like putting all these robots together and all this armor and everything like that. It's like, where does this kid get this money to do all these things? 00;20;59;29 - 00;21;23;17 Speaker 4 I guess. I guess robot fighting. But yeah, he, you know, I think I think from that respect and then, you know, they put the team together. They're a bunch of superheroes goes in again. It kind of it kind of has a bit of an Iron Man for kids feel to me. So I think that I think that it feels marvel to me. 00;21;23;18 - 00;21;24;13 Speaker 4 What do you think, Steve? 00;21;25;10 - 00;21;42;16 Speaker 5 I would say 25% Marvel. 75% Disney. Yeah, like because I like I said earlier, I was surprised that it was a connected to Marvel moment that last week. So I'm still saying 75% Disney, 25% Marvel. What do you think, Sam? 00;21;43;22 - 00;22;14;27 Speaker 6 So I'm going to flip the flip the script on is Steve I'm going to go with 75% Marvel and 25% like Walt Disney slash Pixar. Right. So this is because it has a lot of the it's not a Pixar movie, I don't think, but it has one of the hallmarks of Pixar. But Pixar they got. Yeah, so but to me, it's got this, you know, obviously it's got the superhero team, but it's also got a complicated hero, not just hero, but the hero is a complicated hero. 00;22;16;14 - 00;22;43;02 Speaker 6 And and we have this interpersonal relationship with Baymax and we have hero kind of growing up. And I feel like we we've seen this well similar stories of growth in heroes before we also have a complicated villain. Right. We have the professor who while is certainly a villain and and of course you know is the reason why Heroes brother is dead. 00;22;43;02 - 00;23;10;20 Speaker 6 It wasn't an intentional you didn't try to kill heroes brother and his reason for becoming a villain or his reason for stealing the technology is because he wants to save his, you know, his daughter. Ah. So I do think there is, you know, we've got a villain who's who's we? His origin story reminds me of a lot of villains we get for complicated characters who are not all bad, not all good. 00;23;11;00 - 00;23;30;02 Speaker 6 And I kind of love that about a lot of marvel at this. Of course, we have some more Marvel, you know, villains who are truly evil, but we have somebody like Loki, right. Who's not all bad, not all good, and in some ways, but becomes a hero too. So, yeah, I think it's I actually think it's a little more marvel when I really think about it. 00;23;30;02 - 00;23;46;17 Speaker 6 I'll be honest. My initial instinct was, no, this is not a marvel movie, right? But then when you really think about all the elements of a marvel movie and you've got big fight scenes and and all that stuff and you have comedy, right? We have. Baymax is hilarious. I am not that, you know. Are you satisfied with your care? 00;23;46;17 - 00;24;07;20 Speaker 6 I feel like I can't I can't turn off until I hear that you're satisfied with your care. He when you correct hero about no you don't have a you will have an allergy to whatever it is that's the truth and you're allergic to peanuts or whatever it is that he's you know, it's just like real, you know, lots of humor. 00;24;07;20 - 00;24;24;01 Speaker 6 We have a lot of that kind of stuff in Avengers and in a lot of the other Marvel movies. So yeah, I, I, yeah, I think 75% Marvel and 25% Disney animated film. So yeah, it's a different medium completely because it's animated, but it's not. It's a lot of marvel. 00;24;24;29 - 00;24;28;15 Speaker 3 Derek. Derek. 00;24;28;15 - 00;25;06;11 Speaker 2 To me, this reminded me more of The Incredibles than it did of a marvel movie. Again, the. Yeah, but yes, they're not actually superpowers, but they could have been syndrome. Counter egos are right as far as the people that use it to, you know, corrupt everybody type of thing. I'm does it have its marvel elements? Yes. I mean, obviously, we want to hit that. 00;25;06;11 - 00;25;29;13 Speaker 2 But the Marvel pose, yes, there are parental units that, you know, are nonexistent or don't work. The connection, Nick says that retrieval of the daughter remind me of Anthony, though this came out literally six months before Ant-Man. So this this. 00;25;29;13 - 00;25;29;20 Speaker 3 Was. 00;25;30;10 - 00;26;00;18 Speaker 2 Released 14. So it would have split Guardians of the Galaxy and Age of Ultron. No. So which was right before, which is also right before Ant-Man. So this would have slotted into what was known as phase two and I definitely agree with Nick's coming here feels like it was meant to have a sequel where more team character development would happen. 00;26;00;19 - 00;26;10;24 Speaker 2 And I completely agree. I think he'd been more financially successful. Successful there, probably whatever, especially with the end credits scene where Stanley comes. 00;26;12;03 - 00;26;21;09 Speaker 4 Sam was successful. No, it made like $60 million. It was not it was not a flop, that's for sure. 00;26;21;09 - 00;26;39;04 Speaker 2 Yeah, I but I don't, I think they got so hung up on the pictures that these kind of guys kind of fell by the wayside to the detriment of these guys.
