Basically, if you know the story, Pinocchio, if you watch the original at all, it's the same exact story. It is. It's truly the same story. It's not a shot for shot like The Lion King was and some of those others have been. But it's the exact same story to Pedro makes the wooden boy. 00:04:24:04 - 00:04:36:10 Derrick The Blue Fairy comes to wear Jiminy Cricket. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. We don't know if he turns into a real boy. That's how it ends. That's an excerpt of it was not the entire song of When You Wish Upon a Star. She killed it. She was so good. I've got no strings. So this is hard because this movie was not great. But I also need to caveat all of this by saying I don't care for live action movies, live action remakes. 00:05:29:27 - 00:05:43:12 Kate But so they added a song that wasn't in the original. That was the song for the ballerina that the ballerina sings and the man headed to Pleasure Island. That was another song that was added. 00:05:43:15 - 00:05:46:04 Derrick And Japan had a song at the beginning, remember? 00:05:46:15 - 00:05:48:24 Kate He did. They did he call that singing? 00:05:49:09 - 00:05:51:25 Derrick Well, yeah. And Pierce Brosnan. 00:05:52:03 - 00:06:09:25 Kate So yes, y'all are vicious. And they did cut give a little whistle. They it's good. The music was fine. The music that was performed was fine. The Blue Fairy, in my opinion, was great. 00:06:12:11 - 00:06:16:27 Kate I just overall was not impressed with this movie. I'm going to pass it to Pete. 00:06:17:16 - 00:06:40:26 Pete So I will say this for the songs. They weren't. The new songs weren't bad and they mostly fit with it. They weren't bad. I'm not saying they were great. You know, obviously when you watch Panesar Star is a classic. I Got No Strings is a great little song, but there's not much to that song and that was fine. 00:06:41:21 - 00:06:53:24 Pete The new songs mostly didn't feel terribly out of place. One of them kind of did, but, you know, I didn't I didn't mind the songs. There were so many. 00:06:54:05 - 00:06:59:05 Derrick To give which one felt out of place? What which one felt out of place to you? 00:06:59:26 - 00:07:26:13 Pete Yeah, I think it was the ballerina one that kind of felt out of place. To me, it sounded more like a modern song than other. The other songs, which felt more traditional, animated, you know, classic feeling songs said no, none of them. None of them were great. None of them were particularly catchy. But, you know, they were fine. 00:07:26:27 - 00:07:49:27 Pete The music was not the problem with this movie. How's that? I would I would have had a big problem. I mean, I don't know why you cut give it a whistle, which is also a cute little song. But I didn't miss it. I mean, I realized at the end it wasn't there, but I didn't miss it. But the two songs that were there from the original, those I would have obviously would have missed. 00:07:50:12 - 00:08:13:10 Pete When you went upon to Star and I don't think they would have been crazy enough to cut that in is again got no strings that that scene worked fine I guess so and overall the the orchestral music was fine so I thought the music in the movie and this was Alan Silvestri that scored this movie I mean this was not like this was not some nobody. 00:08:13:10 - 00:08:31:24 Pete This is, you know, Back to the Future. And I mean, he's done a lot of big scores over the years. Well, a lot of Robert Zemeckis scores, too. But yeah, no, I was. Music was fine. It was there was nothing offended me. When you wish upon a star in this in the movie. 00:08:37:17 - 00:08:38:09 Kate No, they didn't. 00:08:38:10 - 00:08:40:24 Derrick They cut. Like for me they did include that they broke it up, but they didn't include that one. I really missed. Give a little whistle because it's the whole always let your conscience be your guide. A lesson from Jiminy Cricket is that song. And we missed that. And that's how you get a hold of your, you know, your conscience. 00:09:10:13 - 00:09:34:12 Derrick And that's how you supposed to get a hold of Jiminy Cricket sticking him under that. We'll get we'll get some of the plot issues later. But I also thought that the one on the way to Pleasure Island was horrible to me. That song did not need to be there. It's almost like they thought, Oh my gosh, this song, this movie's only going to run an hour, 40 minutes. 00:09:34:17 - 00:09:40:25 Kate Which was what song was that? What did it sound sound like or what are they saying? It. I remember it. I just I. 00:09:41:12 - 00:10:01:07 Derrick Wasn't quite in it's a good to be bad type song, but it was basically that kind of a song. Only it wasn't a Danny Elfman song, so it was basically a everyone basically everyone's doing it. Everyone, you know, if you want to be, you know, have friends, you're going to be bad you. They lost me cutting the first half of When You Wish Upon a star at the very beginning, I think kind of set it. Yes. It's there for the end. It's the it's the end credits scene. Yeah. Pinocchio was terrible. Pinocchio himself was horrible. There are say what you will for all the other remake versions. Okay. And I don't care if you have the same clothes, the same hat. He didn't look wooden unless you were here. You know, it's going to have to be a fox and a cat. At least they left it that way. It was fine. It was obviously CGI. Like there were points when Figaro had to like like act but yo can't really you couldn't have even that bothered me so I mean. 00:12:28:23 - 00:12:32:10 Derrick Around in his pocket in his bag it could have been a real kitten. 00:12:32:20 - 00:12:58:10 Kate It could have just. And like there's enough shows out there with, like, talking dogs and talking animals. They're like, you can't tell me you couldn't have just CGI had a tiny bit of a real cat to make it have its reactions. Come on when Figaro is it Kal Yo Cleo. Thank you. And like, I guess. 00:12:58:14 - 00:13:01:19 Derrick I kind of understand one place to do tricks. 00:13:01:26 - 00:13:20:27 Kate Yes, but when Figaro, because I was like, legless and I'm a cat lady, I'm not even sorry, but when that cat, I was like, You can't even use a real cat. This is supposed to be a live action. And in my opinion, if it's live action, you try to CGI as little as possible. Maybe that's just as well. 00:13:20:27 - 00:13:25:08 Pete Nemo or or you make your CGI cat look like a cat. 00:13:25:15 - 00:13:25:26 Kate Yes. 00:13:27:09 - 00:13:30:12 Pete So it didn't it didn't look like a real I mean. 00:13:30:12 - 00:13:31:10 Kate No, I don't know. 00:13:31:15 - 00:13:37:13 Pete Like like I didn't love The Lion King, but at least those animals looked like real animals. 00:13:37:14 - 00:13:52:00 Kate Yeah. Yeah. So just that is probably just what bothered me the most. Even even when the boys started growing, ears and tails. 00:13:52:00 - 00:13:53:26 Derrick Turned into donkey, turning into donkeys. Yeah. 00:13:54:13 - 00:14:14:19 Kate Like even that, I was like, all right. But once they have the ears, can we put them in? Like, and this may have been from doing the electrical parade for so, so many years that we had the donkey boys that was like part of the Pinocchio unit. It's like, okay, what can we. I don't there was I just didn't it didn't include. 00:14:14:19 - 00:14:18:08 Derrick Some of it as far as practical effects rather than CGI. 00:14:18:13 - 00:14:28:15 Kate Yeah, it's like do what you can to make it seem live and not. But Figaro is what got me the most. So what about you? 00:14:29:13 - 00:14:36:11 Pete Yeah. Figaro was the worst. Some of the stuff with Monster was awful, awful, awful, awful CGI. 00:14:36:17 - 00:14:38:27 Derrick We'll get into some feelings about monsters change. 00:14:39:02 - 00:15:10:29 Pete And for them. And for that matter, Monster was pretty bad that they kind of turned into this fictional, tentacled thing as opposed to just a whale. But there was. There was. Okay, so you know how Derek doesn't like Marvel a lot? I hate talking CGI animals. I really I generally there's there's some places that it works. You know, The Jungle Book, I actually enjoyed The Jungle Book, which kind of surprised me. 00:15:11:10 - 00:15:40:06 Pete But I, you know, any of any of these kids movies with any of the, like, air buddies movies, I cannot stand that kind of stuff. And so any time that they had the talking animals but like there's just so much overabundance of CGI that and not great CGI. It was like like there was CGI everywhere. Yeah. Like I was I'm sure let me be honest. 00:15:40:06 - 00:16:01:08 Pete I wasn't sure. It wasn't for a while there. I wasn't sure if anything was real except for Tom Hanks. But but then Stromboli. But then that Stromboli showed up, and I was like, okay, well, there's maybe another person. Yeah. I mean, I got some other things to talk about with this plot, but like, the CGI was was way too heavy. 00:16:02:02 - 00:16:06:14 Pete I didn't. I didn't get the addition of The Seagull all that much either. 00:16:08:05 - 00:16:09:08 Derrick I didn't like Scuttle. 00:16:09:08 - 00:16:12:08 Pete And and. 00:16:12:25 - 00:16:13:18 Derrick He's got all. 00:16:14:08 - 00:16:18:24 Pete Jiminy Cricket, which of course, has to be CGI. 00:16:19:06 - 00:16:19:18 Derrick Yes. 00:16:20:10 - 00:16:30:27 Pete So I have no issue with that. But it did take me a little while to get used to the the design of the character, to the point that I wasn't creeped out by it. 00:16:31:09 - 00:16:36:29 Derrick You know what he reminded me of? He remind me of the of the grasshopper in the grasshopper in the ant cartoon. 00:16:37:29 - 00:16:38:19 Pete Yes. 00:16:38:20 - 00:16:39:16 Kate Or well. 00:16:39:17 - 00:17:14:21 Pete Okay, that's true. Yeah, it was it was. It wasn't. And that I will say Jiminy Cricket wasn't bad. Yeah, I thought the CGI for the for the cricket was good. There was just too many places where they added CGI and and just I was going to, I was going to mention when we get to actually like, you know, round robin on this, you know, we usually have confused Kate I was confused, Pete on some of this because I don't remember the original movie and I don't remember Smoke Monsters. 00:17:15:13 - 00:17:16:16 Pete No, in the original. 00:17:16:16 - 00:17:22:02 Derrick Movie, I was just kidding. It was guys going in and grabbing the donkeys and hauling them off the ride were. 00:17:22:04 - 00:17:44:08 Pete Like like like I was thinking because. Because the one thing I thought of with this movie is like, okay, this is a kids movie. This is they're clearly making this as a kids movie directed at kids. And then you get to that scene where these giant scary smoke monsters are grabbing the donkeys. And I'm like, Do we really need this scary bit here? 00:17:44:18 - 00:17:49:02 Derrick So it's because for little kids, the scariest part is the kids turning into donkeys. 00:17:49:11 - 00:18:02:06 Pete Right? Yeah. And then having them get snatched. Yeah. Well, that's that was. You know that. Well, there's a lot of stuff in this movie. It was awful when I was a kid and I again, I got more to unpack there, but I'll stick with this. So you say. 00:18:02:11 - 00:18:06:02 Kate You just perfectly segue into the next question. 00:18:06:07 - 00:18:08:01 Pete And what's the next question? It's mine, right? 00:18:08:02 - 00:18:13:07 Derrick It is, yeah. Did the changes they made add to or detract from the movie? 00:18:14:15 - 00:18:35:18 Pete Okay. As I said, I hadn't seen the original in a long time. It was not a favorite of mine. This movie creeps me out as a kid and I never was interested in seeing it as an adult, so I'm not even sure. I've probably shown every single, like, even down to like make my music and salute those amigos and things like that to my daughter. 00:18:36:08 - 00:19:02:06 Pete I don't think I've ever shown her this movie, so I don't remember all of it. But I did go to Wikipedia. The biggest problem I had with this movie was that the main story of the movie is kind of a warning or a up of a fable to children that if you misbehave, bad things are going to happen to you. 00:19:02:06 - 00:19:27:12 Pete And if you're if you're good and honest and whatever, good things will happen and it's seemed to me like Pinocchio was never really interested in any of the bad things. Like he like he wasn't really tempted at any point, maybe a little bit by Stromboli, but even that they didn't really show. And then they get to the Pleasure Island thing. 00:19:27:12 - 00:19:52:03 Pete And the whole time it they make the character like he doesn't want to go along and like he's never like into it. Right, right. He's he's he's like horrified by a witch watching it. I would be horrified too. But like, you don't the whole throughline of Jiminy Cricket is the conscience. He's learning to have his own conscience, that it just wasn't there. 00:19:52:03 - 00:20:23:00 Pete And like, without the moral of the story, I didn't know what I was watching. I felt like I was watching a bunch of unrelated scenes that didn't make any sense to me. And, like, just stuff happened and I don't know, it's so that was the biggest change that detracted from it. I also did not understand, like at the beginning they made it so DiPesto had a dead wife and child, right? 00:20:23:20 - 00:20:24:14 Derrick Mm hmm. Yes. 00:20:25:02 - 00:20:45:26 Pete Would you agree? That's like that was the beginning. They did nothing with that either. It, like, vanished from the story, and it's like the reason you did that early on was to give the story more gravitas. Right? 00:20:45:26 - 00:20:46:13 Derrick Probably. 00:20:46:24 - 00:20:49:13 Kate Probably didn't make it make sense. 00:20:49:19 - 00:20:56:21 Pete But then they ignored it. And then then like this guy comes in to buy his clocks and they choose him away, which I think. 00:20:56:21 - 00:20:57:08 Derrick Getting with that. 00:20:57:08 - 00:21:20:25 Pete Again, and they never do anything with that either. And so it's like it felt like a movie that they like cut like 20 minutes from and I couldn't make sense of it. So the changes definitely detracted from the movie because the I mean, there's always a very episode episodic story, right? I mean, very much, very much happens then this happens and this happens. 00:21:21:06 - 00:21:35:01 Pete But the episodes didn't even connect, right. Like Yeah at the end you petto in the in for from what I read back on the original movie, Pedro is sailing off to pleasure Island. 00:21:35:27 - 00:21:36:09 Derrick Not in the. 00:21:36:09 - 00:21:37:24 Pete Original, in the plot. 00:21:38:09 - 00:21:40:16 Derrick In the original he is going to find Pinocchio. 00:21:41:08 - 00:21:48:18 Pete Right. But what I was reading is that he was going to find Pinocchio because he was going off to Pleasure Island to find Pinocchio. They never mention that in this they book. 00:21:49:07 - 00:21:49:18 Derrick They did. 00:21:49:26 - 00:21:50:12 Kate Yeah, they did. 00:21:50:21 - 00:21:51:18 Pete Okay in this step. 00:21:52:12 - 00:21:56:18 Kate Only because that's why he sold all of his clocks was to buy the boat. 00:21:56:21 - 00:21:58:02 Derrick Try the boat, go to Pleasure Island. 00:21:58:06 - 00:22:01:01 Pete And also in the original. Wasn't he already swallowed by the whale? 00:22:02:01 - 00:22:06:27 Derrick Yes. And Pinocchio searches for days to find your paddle. 00:22:07:21 - 00:22:08:12 Kate Oh. 00:22:08:25 - 00:22:15:08 Pete And so while I mean, the the whole movie took place over, like, you know, a day and a half. 00:22:15:16 - 00:22:16:06 Derrick This one. 00:22:16:10 - 00:22:17:08 Pete This one did. Yeah. 00:22:17:09 - 00:22:17:21 Derrick Yeah. 00:22:18:02 - 00:22:20:18 Pete So that in a day, yeah. 00:22:21:03 - 00:22:21:15 Derrick Yeah. 00:22:22:22 - 00:22:50:11 Pete So I, I say there wasn't okay. I'd say I'll give one change that I was okay with and that was the puppeteer girl. Even though her return made very little, she also made no sense to the story. But I did like that character and what they were trying to do there. But bringing her back towards the end didn't make any sense to me. 00:22:50:11 - 00:22:55:14 Pete But what about you, Derek? Did anything add to it? 00:22:55:14 - 00:23:15:06 Derrick No. One of the biggest problems I had is Pleasure Island. Okay. In the original Pleasure Island, they're smoking cigars, they're gambling on pool, they're drinking beer, they're beating the heck out of each other. And in this, they drink root beer and play pool for fun. I mean. 00:23:15:15 - 00:23:16:06 Kate I think. 00:23:16:20 - 00:23:17:00 Pete It's yeah. 00:23:17:09 - 00:23:43:23 Derrick They smash things, including cuckoo clocks. Oh, now, how convenient was that? But that didn't add anything. The thing that bothered me the most is in the first 5 minutes, they broke the fourth wall and made itself so, so Disney self-aware with all the like the Roger Rabbit cuckoo clocks and all that, which I won't say they are missing a huge marketing opportunity if they don't sell some of those cuckoo clock. 00:23:45:10 - 00:24:12:09 Derrick But if you set the tone for that in the first 5 minutes, you've got to do it through the whole story because we agreed and they just stopped. Yes, there was a there were one or two fourth wall jokes in there other places. But they if they're going to do that, which annoyed me at the beginning, but if they're going to do it, keep it up. 00:24:13:10 - 00:24:17:01 Pete And it was again, it was too much. 00:24:17:01 - 00:24:17:15 Derrick Yes. 00:24:18:00 - 00:24:33:04 Pete Because like if you did one, like like, you know, the guy mentioned I want the clock with the duck. And they had so they had a clock with Donald Duck that would have been cute. To have like ten different clocks with different Disney characters was too much. Not it was too much. 00:24:34:18 - 00:24:35:12 Kate Yeah, I. 00:24:35:13 - 00:25:02:08 Derrick Agree. I would agree, Pete to me Pedro not already being in Monster Japan and come on monsters the whale monster was a big huge whale. He is not some whale cracking love child that they created there and not very well, I might add. I'm sorry. If they pay industrial like magic to do these effects, they need to get their money back. 00:25:02:08 - 00:25:29:03 Derrick But even down things to like. I don't know the fact that at the end Pinocchio's, the one that sacrificed himself to help Japan live and Pinocchio's, the one that's unconscious. And Pinocchio is the one that Japan was crying over at the end of the original movie. And the Blue Fairy comes in and turns him real. Am I right? 00:25:29:12 - 00:25:35:09 Derrick And you too may not remember. In the original movie, The Blue Barry shows up in the middle when his nose is growing, right? 00:25:35:09 - 00:25:37:14 Pete Yes, yes, yes. I do remember that. 00:25:37:23 - 00:25:55:28 Derrick I don't know if he's the one that tells and she is the one that tells him, look, you have to start stop telling lies and your nose will go back to normal. Normal. But and in the original, he never loses his his ears and tail until he turns into a real boy. 00:25:55:28 - 00:25:56:18 Kate Oh. 00:25:57:06 - 00:26:22:07 Derrick Because it's he made these decisions now he's got to live with it and that but in Pete I agree with you the whole moral of the story of making good decisions or you're going to have to live with the consequences wasn't there. Yeah and I know from what I saw they did not turn him officially into a real boy because in the original book he didn't turn into a real boy. 00:26:23:01 - 00:26:23:14 Derrick They said. 00:26:23:16 - 00:26:31:06 Kate Okay, I'm glad I didn't miss that because I was like, Wait a second. Five years ago, this would have had a huge marketing blitz. It would have been all over the theaters, and now it's on Disney Plus De Hocus Pocus. 00:34:36:19 - 00:35:02:21 Derrick What would be huge would be everywhere. Hocus pocus or. This would probably be the McDonald's Happy Meals. I mean, and now it's coming straight to Disney. Plus, when I did some looking, Disney has had basically three releases in theaters so far this year. They've had Lightyear, Thor and Doctor Strange coming up. Still, they have Black Panther Strange World, which I think is the animated. 00:35:02:28 - 00:35:03:18 Pete Animated? Yep. 00:35:04:00 - 00:35:39:01 Derrick And the new Avatar two Disney plus they've had Turning Red Chippendale Pinocchio. They're going to have Hocus Pocus two Disenchanted. There's the Diary of a Wimpy Kid and some of those couples have been pretty darn good. And a couple of the ones that came to theaters have been pretty darn bad. What does it take at this point to you other than it being necessarily a marvel movie, which I think that's about the only thing that they will send directly to movies every time is Marvel. 00:35:39:01 - 00:35:44:25 Derrick What's it take to send a Disney movie directly to the theaters at this point? 00:35:44:28 - 00:36:05:10 Kate Kate okay. Well, first of all, I want to say I don't think that there is it's not the same in my opinion. It's not the same as when something went straight to VHS or straight to DVD. In my opinion, it's two different things because I think a lot of people are hearing straight to Disney plus and they're thinking straight to DVD. 00:36:05:13 - 00:36:36:10 Kate And those are two very different things because as someone who I don't have cable, I only have streaming services and I don't go to the movie theater. It takes a lot for me to go into a theater to see a movie, not because I don't want to. They're just expensive. It's expensive to go to the movies. If you go on a date and you get popcorn and drinks and candy and your tickets like you're spending three bucks, it is easily, easily. 00:36:36:27 - 00:37:02:01 Kate And so and that's not counting. If you go to dinner before it, there's just it's it's expensive. And so, I mean, as you were naming off all of those, the ones that went straight to theaters were Marvel and Pixar and Pixar. And with the exception of one of those well, two two of them were animated. They went straight to theater. 00:37:02:01 - 00:37:03:02 Kate They went to theaters. Right. 00:37:03:18 - 00:37:06:26 Derrick So he's going to be the light year again. So for the most part, they're obviously are going to be some exceptions in there. But everything you name it, I was like, okay, animated, okay, animated. Oh, it's a sequel. Oh, disenchanted. It's a sequel. So that doesn't entirely surprise me. Plus, those big, big blockbusters like all the marbles, the Star Wars is the Star Wars movies. 00:37:38:24 - 00:38:01:16 Kate It doesn't surprise me at all that they go to theaters, but they also want people to stay on Disney plus. So if they can drop things only on Disney plus to get people to buy Disney plus, because it's like essentially pure income for them, of course, they're going to do that. So it makes sense to me. It's not going to go to theaters if it's not a big, big blockbuster Marvel or Star Wars for Disney. 00:38:03:13 - 00:38:04:06 Pete You want to go, Derek? 00:38:04:20 - 00:38:26:02 Derrick I was going to say, what prevents and I understand, I'm sure it's the marketing and the distribution, all that stuff. A lot of distribution these days is not six rolls of film is a flash drive, but what's what would keep them from putting Pinocchio in theaters for a month and a half and then dropping it to Disney plus? 00:38:27:00 - 00:38:50:02 Pete Okay. So I'm going to I'm going to tell you my thought on the reason. And it's comes down to one thing, of course, but I'll make money. But I'll say this is if a movie's got a shot at, let's call it $1,000,000,000, they'll put it to theaters. And if it doesn't, I mean, maybe that maybe that's a bad number or maybe half a billion dollars is the number. 00:38:50:11 - 00:39:16:25 Pete But for them to market movies now worldwide costs so much money if they don't think they're going to get back, as I said, half a billion. I mean, like the movies you mentioned, they went to theaters, right? Doctor Strange and Thor. Doctor Strange made $1,000,000,000. Thor made didn't do awesome, but I still think it made like six or $700 million light year. 00:39:16:25 - 00:39:45:12 Pete Did not, but it stunk. So so I think that's why it didn't. But the things that are going to go to theaters are things that they think worldwide can generate the revenue because to put a movie in theaters, it isn't it isn't just the distribution. It it is the marketing. Right. And when they put it on Disney plus, it's much easier to market because they market Disney plus. 00:39:45:12 - 00:40:13:04 Pete So they market yes, they market the individual movies, but they're marketing all the things on Disney plus in kind of one big, you know, big blob. And they can look at their revenue stream for Disney plus that they're getting, you know, 77, 99 for everybody or whatever it is. And, you know, so then they can they can justify the costs of those that. 00:40:13:23 - 00:40:28:19 Pete So I agree. Hocus pocus two if they put it in theaters, yeah, it might make $200 million or something like that internationally. Probably not. I think Pinocchio would have done okay internationally maybe. 00:40:33:04 - 00:40:55:22 Pete But but again, I think I think it's they're looking at it as in, okay, we could generate $200 million and the movie only cost us 50 million, but we'd spend 100 million on advertising. We're better off just having that exclusive to Disney plus to market. I mean, it's what Kate said. The but anyways, I just it's it's all about when you're a corporation like Disney, you don't look at millions, you look at billions. And it's I mean, it's kind of sad in that to me, what I was hoping streaming would do is generate more original and little movies like the original Hocus Pocus, like, yeah, make more the like. 00:41:52:25 - 00:42:15:18 Pete So you have content, make more those movies. I don't need live action, Pinocchio and live action Lady and the Tramp in live action. Mufasa and all these things, you know, give me, give me, you know. Okay good give me you know Mighty Ducks. Give me National Treasure Series. Give me, you know, these different shows. Give me content, but I would like some movie content.
